Things that make me eco-crazy

No one appreciates a stab at being environmentally friendly more than me, but when it borders on the ridiculous, I get a little nutty (read: frustrated). This article forwarded to me by a good friend (“Thanks Steph!”) 10 Smart Uses for Old Plastic Bags lists out ten ways plastic bags can be reused. Not only does the article not recommend avoiding plastic bags all together or recycling them (heaven forbid) but the uses border on the ridiculous. Tell me what you’d think of someone who in following idea #8 wore plastic bags over their shoes? And it’s not like I’m concerned about image, I mean if wearing plastic bags over my shoes was a good idea, I’d bear the burden of public perplexity. I do appreciate that there are some uses for plastic bags and that not all have to be avoided or recycled, i.e., lining garbage cans, picking up poo, etc. I really don’t mean to trash the writer, but she/he couldn’t have felt good writing this article (or maybe they were laughing hysterically).

So maybe you’re saying, “OK Miss Smarty Britches, are there any reuses you do approve of?” Well, I’m no expert in what exactly are the most efficient ways to reuse plastic bags, but I have seen some really interesting ideas. Most require the ability to crochet. I haven’t yet mastered crocheting, but it is on my life skill set list (not to be confused with a bucket list). One thing to note is some crocheting of plastic bags is done by women living in impoverished areas. By selling the recycled bag items, they learn a trade, clean up their neighborhoods, and earn an income. Talk about lemons and lemonade.

Here are just a couple:
Art
Tote Bags (yes, bags made out of bags) or Here

There are a lot more sites you can find with uses for plastic bags. But if none of these appeal to you, then please feel free to wear them on your shoes, just don’t mind my snicker.
